Ben 10 Vs Ben 10: Alien Force

June 2, 2008

(Wow, first non game post in a long time)

The Cartoon Network a few years ago premiered Ben 10 on the masses. The show follows the main character Ben(who is 10 years old, thus the name), his cousin Gwen and their grandfather Max. The show starts with Ben finding a device called the Omnitrix which attaches itself onto his wrist. The Omnitrix allows Ben to transform into 10 different aliens(another reason for 10). This number increases through the series and a sneak peak at the future shows that he will eventually have 10,000 alien forms. Ben uses the Omnitrix to be a hero, save the earth yada yada yada. The series was pretty good. It was one of those shows teenagers could watch to, but the kid arguments between Ben and Gwen/Ben’s annoying kid personality were annoying and were the only things i didn’t like about the series.
Cartoon Network stoped the show only to create a new show called Ben 10: Alien Force. This series takes place 5 years after the Ben 10 finishes. Ben is now 15, and thankfully much more mature. He morphed from an annoying 10 year old to a nice, smart and a pretty good dude all around. The series start with Ben without the Omnitrix (They took it off at some point after the series). Ben and Gwen now have a good relationship, they appear much closer and they have reached a point where they come to eachother for help and advise. When he regains the Omnitrix Ben looses access to his original alien forms but gains new ones(also the Omnitrix gets smaller and looks more like a watch)

I’m not going in too deep with the plot of either series but Alien Force is definitely the better of the two. It seems Cartoon Network saw that a big fanbase for the original series were teenagers and made the characters teenagers to appeal to them more. I think this was a great move because to older viewers like myself, the kid fighting/Ben’s personality were a really big down point for the series(maybe I’m just too old at 19 to relate). The teenage awkwardness of dating, potential dates and overall increase in maturity really help the series. If you haven’t seen the original series, its not that big of a deal, Alien Force doesn’t need you to know everything about the original series to enjoy it. It airs Saturdays at 10:00am and Sundays at 11:00am.
